Whaddon Chase gold staters are among
the most distinctive of ancient
British coins because of their
cruciform obverse design. Unlike the
later Addedomaros staters of similar
design, these early Whaddon Chase
staters are struck in a golden gold.
This a glorious example which easily
qualifies as 'extremely fine'. This
particular type was not included in
the celebrated Whaddon Chase,
Buckinghamshire, hoard of 1849,
though it was illustrated by William Stukeley, the 'Arch-Druid' of
Stonehenge fame, in his
Twenty-Three Plates of the Coins of
the Ancient British Kings,
published in 1776. Chris Rudd May
list.
