Coin of the week

The obverse of this big, big Addedomaros Floral Spiral gold stater is weakly struck as is so often the case. However, this is more than compensated by the coin's virtues. Like the Addedomaoros Floral Spiral gold stater we sold a year ago for £5400 (Chris Rudd List 92, front cover and No.41) this specimen was also struck on an unusually large flan and boldly displays the major portion of this king’s magnificent moniker which has been interpreted variously as ‘great in steadfastness’ or ‘great in his holding fast to his territory’ or ‘possessing a big chariot’ or ‘great in chariots’. Does size matter? With a design like this, it does. Were it not for the fact that the flan measures a massive 19 millimetres (almost the size of a Gallo-Belgic Broad Flan stater) you would not have the uncommon pleasure of seeing so much of the king's name.
