Coin of the week

We cannot recall a time when more collectors were showing more interest in high grade gold staters of the ancient peoples of Britain and Gaul. We aren't sure why this is and we wish that we had more pretty gold staters to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for them. But we mustn't complain because we still seem to be attracting more gold staters than any other dealers we know, including the largest and the wealthiest. Take this superb Wonersh gold stater, for example. Last November we sold a beauty for £2,000 (Chris Rudd List 96, no.14). The above specimen is arguably even nicer. It's a little rounder, with a better centred obverse and shows marginally more of the spiral. There's little point in blathering on about it. Either you know what galloping good value they represent, in comparison with other ancient gold coins of  similar rarity and condition, or you don't. In the end, words are just words. This Wonersh gold stater is an excessively rare variant (only four others recorded) of a very rare type. Chris Rudd May list.                          14.4.08
