This delectable Addedomaros
Floral Spiral gold stater is a
little bit different from most –
different from those illustrated
by Evans, Mack and Van Arsdell -
and comes from the same pair of
dies shown by Spink Coins of
England 202. The key
distinguishing feature of ours
is that the eight-shaped scroll
in front of the horse takes the
form of a reversed S,
whereas others have a regular S.
This specimen is particularly
well struck and displays a
degree of detail often missing
from the cusps of the two
obverse crescents. The colour of
the gold alloy of this example
is also noticeably more golden
and less coppery than others
we’ve seen of this type. In
every respect this is remarkably
attractive. It even weighs more
than the majority of Addedomaros
gold staters recorded, which is
another indication – along with
its more golden colour - that
this superb specimen probably
contains more gold that most
Addedomaros staters.
To be auctioned in Chris Rudd's
July catalogue.
