The Maldon Wheel is one of four
extremely rare uninscribed
quarter staters which are found
north of the river Thames,
mostly in Essex, and which are
clearly imitating Qc type
quarters minted by southern
tribes, notably the Regini and
Atrebates. The two defining
features of the Maldon Wheel are
firstly the straight line which
links the wreath ‘spike’ to the
obverse wheel and secondly the
beaded circle around the wheel
in front of the horse. Both are
clearly seen on this splendid
specimen, which is the first
we've had. It is struck in
beautifully toned gold, with a
clear wheel and bold horse. Only
seven others recorded, unlisted
by Van Arsdell, the British
Museum Catalogue and Spink.
