Look at this
wonderful Wonersh stater,
sharply engraved and crisply
struck from fresh dies in a
gorgeous rose gold. Look how
boldly delineated the crossed
wreaths are. Look how well
defined the so-called 'bear's
paws' are in the angles of its
cruciform motif (these 'paws'
were actually derived from
Apollo's locks of hair, believe
it or not). Look at that
delightfully stylised horse with
its scissors-style head. Look at
how the solar whirl above the
horse is decorated with little dots
in between each ray and
how we can almost feel it
spinning across the sky. Look at
the spoked sun-wheel under the
horse. And finally, have you
spotted that third solar ring
(Van Arsdell calls it an
'anemone') right in front of the
horse? We haven't seen a Wonersh
stater quite like this before.
We don't reckon this variant has
been recorded before, but we'll
double check before suggesting
that this specimen may be
unique. Chris Rudd
