Talking of Torksey

What a marvellous Monday this is! It's not only brighter and slightly warmer in north Norfolk this morning. It's thrilling too because we're talking about Torksey - only briefly at this stage, but we can't keep the news to ourselves. Above you see a Torksey Quarter - an intriguing and screamingly rare gold quarter stater named after the village of Torksey in Lincolnshire (11th century Turecesieg 'island of a man called Turec') where the first one was found. As you can see, its design is somewhat unusual for a gold coin of the Corieltavi, especially the cruciform motif on the obverse - not unlike the basic design of the Icenian gold quarter known as Gisleham Glory, featured on the front cover of our March List 110 (it sold for £2500). Only two other Torksey Quarters are recorded by the CCI and this is the first one we've had the pleasure of offering to you, but not just yet. You'll have to wait until Tuesday 4 May (Monday being a Bank holiday).
