Like Queen Boudica and Queen
Victoria - two great British queens
- the name Boduoc means 'victory'.
Unlike these two famous women,
Boduoc was a man. We know he was
from the male heads (one bearded) on
his silver coins and because
Boduognatus, leader of the Nervii in
Belgica, was also a man (Caesar,
De Bello Gallico 2.23). Boduoc
was a Dobunnic king, c. 20 BC/AD,
and probably ruled the northern part
of the territory. This fabulous gold
stater of Boduoc, found at Tysoe in
Warwickshire, early 1994, is one of
the finest specimens known. Ex Brian
Bettison collection. Chris Rudd
