Coin of the week

The Tincomarus Alton type is one of the most important gold staters in the British series because it helped numismatists to read the king’s name correctly (Tincomarus not Tincommius). And this example has what is arguably one of the finest – if not the finest – reverse of the eight known specimens. Every single one of the ten letters in the king’s name is deeply engraved, on the flan and clearly legible. The concealed face on the obverse is also beautifully revealed. This is a superb specimen which we can confidently grade as 'near Extremely Fine' and, yes, the type is still Extremely Rare, with only seven others recorded, including two in the British Museum. Chris Rudd January catalogue. What a great way to start the New Year!             9.11.09
