Coin of the week

There aren't many ancient British gold coins that you can truthfully describe as 'Bold EF'. This superb Vosenos Star Horse gold quarter stater of the Cantiaci, c.10BC-AD 5, is one of the few. It is in extremely fine condition and it is very boldly struck. Like the majority of ancient British kings of the late iron age, Vosenos – his name means ‘somewhat old man’ – or Vodenos (an alternative rendering) is known to us solely from his coins, all of which are extremely rare. He may have ruled as a vassal of Dubnovellaunos. Only a handful of collectors can claim to have a coin of Vosenos in their collection. He’s one of the most elusive of ancient British rulers. Even fewer collectors can boast to have a coin of Vosenos as beautiful as this one. The two II at the end of the inscription represent a single letter E. Only ten other specimens of Vosenos Star Horse are known, including four in museums. This comes from the Larry Baker collection, USA. Chris Rudd July list.                                      16.6.08
