Look closely, animal lovers and wild
beast watchers! The creature on this
scarce-as-hen's-teeth
silver coin of the Corieltauvi is
not what you think it is. No, Larry,
it's not a boar. It's a wolf, a
genuine Lincolnshire wolf, as
probably seen by our Corieltauvian
die cutter before wolves became
extinct in the east of England. The
last recorded wild wolf in Britain,
pictured here, was killed in 1743 in
the forest near the source of the
river Findhorn in north-east
Scotland. One of the Gaelic names
for the wolf is Madadh-Allaidh
'the wild dog'. We think some
collectors will go wild with desire
to capture our elusive Lincolnshire
wolf. Only six others recorded,
including two in the British Museum.
This is the first we've had and
you'll see it in Chris Rudd's
November list.
