Coin of the week

This huge chunk of Corieltavian gold, measuring 19-21 mm and weighing 5.25g, is one of the prettiest Vep CorF Triadic staters we've had. Boldly struck in a lustrous rose gold, this is an astonishingly beautiful gold stater - better than the British Museum's example - and a superb specimen of ancient British coin art. It is deeply imbued with lunar symbolism. The two moons on the obverse are linked by a lateral bar and the body of the Corieltavian horse is composed of five crescent moons. Unlike classical coins, the lettering on this Lincolnshire stater is cleverly contrived to fit into the design and is employed decoratively as well as functionally. Note how the letter E is tied to the letter V, saving time for the engraver and saving space on the flan. Ex Larry Baker collection. Chris Rudd November list.                         18.9.06
