Our office is closed over Christmas,
20 December to 4 January. So here
very briefly are three coins for you
to think about for the next three
weeks: |
|
  |
|
First, a
Baiocasses Boar
silver stater,
c.75-50 BC, with
a little boar
hidden in the
hair and a
magnificent
human-headed
horse. The
majority are
tucked away in
French museums.
Ex Le Catillon
hoard, Jersey,
1957. |
|
  |
|
Secondly, a
truly moony
Freckenham
Crescents gold
stater, Triad
Type, with three
pellets above
and below the
double-moon
emblem, which is
very boldly
struck. Ex Erich
Karl collection. |

|
Third, a superb
Cunobelinus Classic
gold stater with two
things missing. For
a start, there's no
stalk in the ear of
corn. Now what else
is absent? Can you
see what isn't
there? Look again.
Can't spot it? Okay
I'll tell you:
There's no V at the
end of CAM! This is
an excessively rare
variant, only one
other recorded. And
of course, as you
know, the No Stalk
Type is an extremely
rare type anyway.
All three coins in
Chris Rudd's January
list out 5 January.
Happy Christmas and
a Happy New Year!
