This superb rose-gold stater of
Dubnovellaunos shows the
characteristic wreath-band on the
obverse, which conceals two stylised
faces composed of the outline
crescents and rings. The reverse
depicts a spritely and quite
naturalistic horse at full gallop,
with a branch of victory beneath it.
By far the most remarkable aspect of
this beautiful coin is its almost
complete inscription, DVBNOVIILLAVN.
This version has a double letter I
which is sometimes used to indicate
the letter E. Rainer Kretz, who
wrote an important article on
Dubnovellaunos eight years ago
('From Kentish lad to Essex man: The
Enigma of Dubnovellaunos' Chris Rudd
list 31), comments: "Crisply struck,
well-centred examples of
Dubnovellaunos staters are few and
far between. They also rarely show
virtually the entire inscription,
thus making this a superior specimen
indeed." Chris Rudd November List.
