Coin of the week

This superb gold stater of the Veneti tribe of Brittany is remarkable for nine reasons: (1) There is a boar standing on the head of Apollo. (2) There are little severed human heads tied to Apollo's head. (3) The horse has a human head. (4) There is another head below the horse. (5) There is a big bird perched on the knee of the horse. (6) This specimen is one of the finest known. (7) Only seven other examples have been recorded - all from Brittany. (8) This one was found in the Isle of Wight. (9) This is one of the few to be offered for public sale - and probably the first outside France. Chris Rudd March list.                                                      2.1.07
