Found at Newchurch,
Isle of Wight, in
April last year,
this is the third
Tincomarus Alton
gold stater we have
sold (List
93, No.17, £1750;
List 94, No.20,
£7,700) – the other
two came from
mainland sites – and
is the first
specimen we have had
which clearly
displays the whole
of the king’s name,
without any of the
letters being either
absent or weakly
struck. All ten
letters are present
and correct and, as
if to emphasise
this, the last part
of the name is
underlined by a long
wiggly snake whose
elliptical head can
be seen above the
horse’s head. Is the
little trefoil under
the horse’s head
supposed to be a
miniature version of
the three
horse-muzzles we see
on the Commios
stater? Or is it
just a space filler?
