We’ve had
only one other example of this
excessively rare Ratham Triadic
gold quarter stater (Chris
Rudd List 67, no.29) and
that was almost six years ago.
We attributed our previous one
to the Belgae of Hampshire, but
now feel that it is more likely
to be a product of the Regini of
West Sussex, not just because of
its Chichester provenance but
also because similar wreath
motifs and similar horses occur
on other quarter staters of the
Regini. Though we call the type
‘triadic’ there were originally
four pellets beneath the
horse; faint traces of the other
two pellets can be seen on this
specimen and a fourth pellet can
also be faintly seen on our
previous example. Both specimens
were struck from the same pair
of dies. Both came out of the
ground in exceptionally sharp
condition. Chris Rudd
