It is always
much more difficult to acquire
gold staters of the Dobunni than
staters of other tribes. This is
because the Dobunni seemed to
have commenced minting later
than other tribes and none of
their known rulers apparently
reigned as long as other British
kings such as Verica and
Cunobelinus, and therefore
issued fewer coins. So it is
with pride and pleasure that we
introduce you to this rare gold
stater of Anted. It sports the
famous tribal tree emblem, all
three tails of the triple-tailed
horse are clearly displayed and
you can clearly read the ruler's
name. The letter D is replaced
with a Greek theta, which
suggests that Anted may have
been pronounced Anteth.
This lovely specimen is a
pedigree piece that comes from
two good collections - those of
Commander Richard Paston Mack,
MVO (1901-74), author of The
Coinage of Ancient Britain,
and of Dr George Henry Abbott,
MB, CM (1867-1942). Chris Rudd
