Some ancient British
coins have more than
a hint of druidic
ritual about them.
This Death Mask
silver unit is
obviously related to
the excessively rare
Feather Head silver
unit we sold five
years ago (Chris
Rudd List 75,
no.29) and may
possibly also be
associated with
other facing-head
silver coins of the
south coast, such as
the Petersfield
Cernunnos (VA—,
BMC—, SCMB
769, 1982) and
Chichester Cernunnos
(CCI 99.1271). For
further discussion
on the possible
origin of such types
see ‘Horned god or
druid priest?’ in
Chris Rudd List
103, 2-5. This is
the first example we
have had of the
remarkable Death
Mask type and, as
far as we are aware,
only one other
example has come out
of the ground, which
is now in a private
collection. This is
a great rarity.
