Derek Allen
describes this
Classic Left Type as
the best of all
Cunobelin's gold
staters. Sir John
Evans says: "The
reverse is
remarkable, as
having the horse to
the left, instead of
to the right. The
ornament above the
horse is also
singular, and may be
intended to be a
flower on a long
stalk, between two
waving leaves."
Similar to the
heraldic plume of
the Prince of Wales,
it could be an iris
or a bulrush. Only
three other
specimens of this
superb gold stater
share its die
pairing, including
one in the British
Museum (BMC 1834,
which Sir John Evans
bought from Spink in
1903) and another in
the National Museum
of Wales. This is a
prestigious pedigree
piece of superlative
quality, from a well
known, well
documented treasure
hoard. Chris Rudd
