Coin of the week

Here is one of the nicest and most unusual Ingoldisthorpe (say it in-gulls-thorp) Triquetra gold staters we've ever seen. Probably struck by Cassivellaunos to finance the British campaign against Caesar in 54 BC, this historic piece of gold is big - 20mm in diameter - and heavy, very heavy, 6.38 grams. Gorgeous golden gold and an extremely rare type. Moreover, this is an excessively rare variety, with only three others known. The Ingoldisthorpe Triquetra type is not listed by Van Arsdell and there isn't a single one in the British Museum. A great rarity in great condition. Chris Rudd March list.                                                                                       25.2.08
