Every collector of ancient
British coins would love to have
a Boduoc gold stater in
his or her collection. But few,
very few, will ever achieve this
ambition. Though technically
classed as only 'Rare' (31-50
examples recorded by the Celtic
Coin Index), Boduoc staters are
in reality much harder to
acquire than this statistic
would suggest. For a start, they
normally come out of the earth
in the West Midlands and
sometimes disappear immediately
into a private collection
without ever going anywhere near
a dealer (this happened to one
last week; the finders conducted
their own little kitchen
auction). Then, when a Boduoc
stater does occasionally come
onto the open market, it
inevitably fetches a very high
price (because everyone wants
one). The superb specimen we are
showing you here is one of the
finest we've seen - in virtually
mint state condition, with
flawless, satin smooth surfaces
and large, clear letters. It
will be auctioned by Chris Rudd early in
January. If you've set your
heart on one day getting a
magnificent Boduoc stater, we
wish you good fortune in your
bidding.
