It's years since we've had a
right-facing Norfolk Wolf gold
stater as nice as this one (the
right-facing type is earlier,
heavier and contains more gold).
This is a really heavy Norfolk
Wolf gold stater and must be one
of the first to be issued. The
gorgeous golden colour confirms
its early position at the
beginning of the series. Looking
at its rich gold tones – this
coin has clearly been out of the
ground for quite some time – and
feeling its substantial weight
between your fingers, you would
probably be amazed to discover
that it may contain less than 50
per cent gold. Yet that could
well be the reality. The
heaviest Norfolk Wolf stater
recorded in Hobbs (BMC 215, 6.12
grams) is actually only 42 per
cent gold, the rest being 41 per
cent silver and 17 per cent
copper. Never mind the alloy,
feast your eyes on this ravenous
wolf! Chris Rudd's May list.
