In Gaulish Personal Names
(Oxford 1967) Professor D.Ellis
Evans suggests that Addedomaros
means 'great in steadfastness' or
'great in his holding fast to
(his settlement on ) his territory
(?)' or the like, or else an
inverted bahuvrihi compound meaning
'he whose steadfastness is great'.
In Etudes Celtiques 24 (1987)
J.T.Koch suggests a completely
different interpretation:
'possessing a big chariot' or 'great
in chariots'. This beautiful gold
stater reveals the first three
letters of the king's name. One
wonders if there was some connection
between the Catuvellauni and the
Trinovantes and the Eceni because
all three tribes show two opposed
crescents on some of their early
gold coins. This is just one of over
130 coins in Chris Rudd's January
Sale, all greatly reduced in price.
