It is our pleasure
and our privilege to
present an entirely
new type this week -
a silver coin you
have never seen
before. We introduce
the Hound of
Basingstoke, fresh
out of its earthen
kennel in Hampshire
where it has been
interred for the
last two millennia.
Is it a dog, a
lion or an
uncomfortable horse?
The somewhat
crouched stance, as
if ready to pounce,
looks more canine
than leonine or
equine. Whatever the
animal is, it is
unusual to see one
that is looking back
over its shoulder.
Apart from Kentish
coin types, six of
which have
head-turning beasts,
we can recall only
six other types from
the southern tribes
and each one is
extremely or
excessively rare.
Chris Rudd May list.
