This very rare gold
stater, Andoco
Phallic Bucranium,
was found by metal
detectorist Barrie
Plasom near Turvey
on the Bucks/Beds
border in November
2006 and was
featured in
Treasure Hunting,
November 2007, on
account of its great
beauty as well as
its great rarity.
The author of the
article, numismatic
photographer Jeremy
de Montfalcon,
described it as "a
spectacular gold
stater...a
masterpiece of
Celtic
workmanship...that
has survived in near
perfect condition."
Celtic scholar
Rainer Kretz says it
is "of exceptional
artistic merit with
the engraving equal
to the finest of
Tasciovanos'
issues." He adds:
"The CCI records
contain just
nineteen genuine
gold staters of
Andoco, five of
which are in museum
collections. In a
series where modern
fakes are common
(eight have been
recorded so far),
this represents a
rare opportunity to
acquire a genuine
Andoco stater in
exceptional
condition." One of
the many rare and
fascinating coins in
Chris Rudd's
September list.
