The B-Type is one of the rarest
of Cunobelinus’ corn-ear gold
staters, with only five others
recorded at the Celtic Coin
Index, including two in the
British Museum. It is impossible
to know why the engraver decided
to add the letter B to the CVNO
which we normally see on
Cunobelinus’ series of so-called
‘Plastic Type’ staters. It was
probably for no rational reason
other than the die cutter saw a
gap in front of the horse and
felt that it needed filling with
something. This is an especially
mouth-watering specimen. The ear
of corn is positioned centrally
on the flan and CAMV is neatly
engraved either side of it.
Virtually the whole of the
sprited horse is on the flan, as
is the unusual CVNOB
inscription. We can declare with
confidence and without fear of
contradiction that this
Cunobelinus B-Type is an
exceptionally fine example of an
excessively rare gold stater.
This superb gold stater will be
sold by phone bid auction in
Chris Rudd's
November catalogue.
