Though not the rarest of gold coins
found in England, this Gallo-Belgic
Broad Flan gold stater is one of the
earliest imports and in attractive
condition. The drawing shows a
pretty example from the collection
of Sir John Evans, found at Leighton
Buzzard in 1849. Ours also is a
large specimen (they vary greatly in
size) which provides a full view of
the head and hair on one side (the
face is often missing) and the horse
and winged figure on the other side,
together with an especially nice
radiated rosette below. Apart from a
few minor scuffs, this is a most
pleasing piece in a superior state
of preservation, well above average
