Coin of the week

Cunobelinus 'hound of Belenus' and master of Camulodunon 'fortress of Camulos' (the ancient British war-god), was unquestionably the most powerful and most influential ruler of the Pritani (Latin Britanni) 'figured folk' or 'tattooed people'. Professor Barry Cunliffe writes: 'He ruled for more than thirty years, issuing throughout that time a prodigious amount of gold, reflecting the evident prosperity of his kingdom'. This superb Classic Type gold stater, with its robust Roman-style horse rearing up on its hind legs, is a bold reminder of the golden reign of Cunobelinus. This is an extremely rare coin, with only fifteen other examples recorded. It is just one of over 130 coins in Chris Rudd's January Sale, all greatly reduced in price.                                                                                         3.1.06
