Here is an
astonishingly
admirable
Addedomaros Floral
Spiral gold stater,
struck on a colossal
flan of pale rose
gold, with a superb
crescent motif, a
complete swirling
sun and a large part
of the regal name
showing.
Like Commios
in the South Thames,
Addedomaros usually
managed to get only
part of his name on
to his staters. This
coin shows more than
most. Just two
others are recorded
in the Celtic Coin
Index from this pair
of dies. This coin
is lavishly
decorated with
fascinating symbols
and the huge flan
ensures that they
are well displayed.
Two points worth
noting. It is
probably no accident
that the two
triangulated
crescents on the
obverse resemble a
Celtic form of the
letter A (for
Addedomaros); these
guys weren’t at all
shy about regal
branding and self
publicity. The
double volute in
front of the horse
occurs on a number
of different Celtic
coins, including
early gold Cantian
staters and a silver
coin of the Boii. Ex
Larry Baker
collection.
