Coin of the week

Here, in a wonderfully toned gold, is a large-flan Vepocomes Triadic stater (see the triad of dots under the tail?). This mouth-watering gold stater was found in 1991 at Scremby, three miles north east of Spilsby, Lincolnshire. The two rosettes on the obverse invariably look like owlish eyes to me and the four scrolled knobs (the one at 5 o’clock is clearly displayed) actually represent miniature heads, possibly human heads. The letters V and E of VEP are joined together to save space and CORF is beautifully displayed on this specimen. It is generally agreed that the letter F stands for Latin filius, suggesting that Vepocomes (to give him his full name) was the son of Cor- (whose full name we don’t know).
