The Cunobelinus Classic Left
Type gold stater apparently
comes towards the end of the
great king's long reign and is
undoubtedly one of the most
impressive, most majestic gold
staters struck in ancient
Britain. The ear of corn is
centrally positioned and reveals
some pretty scrollwork at the
base of its stalk. And, instead
of the usual branch, there is a
beautiful floral motif above the
Roman-style horse which is
rearing up on its hind legs.
This exquisite specimen comes
from the prestigious Larry Baker
collection and was found at
Sittingbourne, Kent (territory
of the Cantiaci) in the 1930s or
1940s. Only 13 others are
recorded of this Classic Left
Type and three of those are in
the British Museum. Chris Rudd
