Here's an
important gold stater from an
important king in Britain's
ancient history: Commios
Muzzles.
This is a highly desirable
specimen because it was struck
on a large flan, which means
that we can see not only the
whole horse, not only all three
horse-muzzles above it, not only
the complete spoked wheel below
it, but also the first five
letters of COMMIOS. Commios was
the first king in Britain to put
his name on coins; so to see so
much of it on a stater adds
considerably to its value.
Archaeologist Dr John Creigton
proposes that Commios didn’t
flee to Britain, as stated
by Frontinus (Stratagems,
2.13.11), but was sent by
Caesar, with Roman gold, to
protect Roman interests in
southern Britain. Chris Rudd
