The CLMVL
monogram on this beautiful biga-type
gold stater of Cunobelinus
(no.52) is short for Camulodunon
‘fortress of Camulos’.
Colchester archaeologist Philip
Crummy proposes that Camulodunon
“was a Catuvellaunian settlement
from the beginning, founded by a
land-locked tribe anxious to
gain a coastal trading post. Its
extensive [west-facing] defences
suggest that its presence was an
unwelcome intrusion into
somebody else’s territory” (City
of Victory, 1997, 21).
This is an extremely fine
example of the celebrated
biga-type stater, with a full CLMVL
monogram and two bold horses. In
fact, it's a gorgeous specimen
of one of Britain's most
highly prized gold staters. Ex
Larry Baker collection (USA).
