The Belgae of Hampshire,
numismatically ignored until 1997
(see Chris Rudd list 26), have
produced many great rarities. This
Cogwheel Leaves silver half unit is
one such rarity. The type was
completely unknown until 18 years
ago. Then in 1988 and 1990 the late
Ian Finney, a great Celtic
collector, purchased two, now in
Birmingham Museum. The Cogwheel
Leaves shown here is only the third
example known. "Neither of the
Finney coins is particularly sharp"
says Dr Philip de Jersey, "and this
new discovery provides us with a
clear view of the reverse for the
first time. The style of both sides
links the coin fairly positively
into the Danebury series." Chris
