Oh what a beautiful Gallo-Belgic
Broad Flan gold stater this is! Just
look at Apollo's bountiful looks.
Did you ever see a man with such big
hair? The horse and vestigial
charioteer stand out well too on
this spanking specimen. It's
undoubtedly the prettiest example
we've had of this type, which we
sold eleven years ago for £3,000. It
warms the heart to meet a wonderful
old friend like this again. Possibly
minted by the Bellovaci of the
region around Beauvais (see how
their tribal name has survived over
2,000 years), this superb, very
golden stater was struck from dies
26/29 (John Sills, Gaulish and
early British gold coinage,
p.447). Only eight - repeat, only
eight - examples have been
recorded from this die pairing. One
of the star pieces from the stellar
Celtic collection of Brian Bettison.
