This gorgeous Cunobelinus Classic
Left Type gold stater is something
of a mystery. Why does the horse
face left and not right, as on all
the other corn-ear staters? Was it a
mistake? Or was it deliberately
designed this way? It is unlikely to
have been done in error because
two reverse dies were cut this
way. Moreover, the ornament above
the horse isn't the usual branch. It
is clearly a floral motif, not
unlike a regal fleur-de-lys.
Therefore, turning the horse in the
opposite direction must have been
intentional, not accidental. Why was
this done? It's a mystery. And it's
a great rarity, with only eleven
other examples recorded, including
two in the British Museum. Chris Rudd September list
(which features the wrong obverse
image for this coin, the above image
being the right one).
