Last year in
Norfolk a new type of Ale Sca silver
unit was found which varies
significantly from VA 996, BMC 4576,
Chris Rudd list 54, no.48. Assuming
that the boar’s forelegs stand for
II (which equates with the Celtic
letter E) and that the final letter
is O (not N), we may read the new
inscription as ALII FF SCAVO, which
might be interpreted as 'Ale
son-of-son of Scavo' or ‘made by Ale
son of Scavo.’ Dr Philip de Jersey
sees a vague parallel with the
blundered Aun Cost legends which
sometimes read CNAVO (Chris Rudd
list 45, no.19). We’ll publish a
fuller report later.
