When a metal detectorist sees
that we've got a good price for
an extremely rare coin - one
he's been hanging onto for
years, unsure of its rarity and
value - he phones Liz and says
"Hey, I've got one of those!"
This has happened many times -
we refer to the phenomenon as
"coins coming out of the
woodwork" - and it's happened
yet again with this comely Comux
gold stater. Amazingly this is
the third Comux gold
stater we've had in three years
(most dealers and auction houses
have never had one). Let's put
that into context: only seven
others are known in total and
that includes three in the
British Museum. So we've been
most fortunate in acquiring this
one. We grade it Good VF and can
confidently claim that it is one
of the finest specimens known.
The king's name, which may mean
something like 'one who is as
high' or 'one who is very high',
is written upside down above the
horse and the inscription is
clearly visible. The 'tree of
life' is also well centred and
is surrounded by smooth,
unscratched surfaces. To be
auctioned in Chris Rudd's July
catalogue.
