Some months ago I
showed this
extremely rare
silver unit struck
by the Catuvellauni
c.55-45 BC, to Dr
John Sills of
Grimsby. Looking at
the helmeted head
which is decorated
with a pair of
triangular wings, he
said he thought that
it could be of
Cassivellaunos, the
ancient British
war-leader mentioned
by Caesar. This
identical
double-wing design
can be seen on Early
Whaddon Chase gold
staters, VA 1470-72,
BMC 279-94. Which is
why we call this
coin type Whaddon
Helmet. Only nine
other specimens are
recorded, including
one in the British
Museum.
