There are so many fascinating
aspects to this gorgeous ancient
British gold stater that it is hard
to know where to begin. So, this
week, we'll just pick on two points.
Firstly, did you realise that there
is a sinuous snake on the obverse?
It weaves its serpentine way around
the eyebrows of the concealed
'spirit face' before rearing its
head with wide-open jaws. Secondly,
were you aware that there are four
horse-snouts on the reverse? Well,
there are. One on the three-tailed
horse, where you'd expect it to be.
Plus another three stuck together in
a triangular formation immediately
above the horse. This is why we've
called the coin Commios Muzzles.
Yes, this gorgeous gold stater was
struck by King Commios - the first
British ruler to place his name on
coins - and, if you peer closely,
you can just see the tips of some of
the letters below and in front of
the horse.
