Coin of the week

Here is an astonishing example of one of the earliest regally-branded gold staters issued in Britain. This beautiful Addedomaros Floral Spiral gold stater is unquestionably one of the finest we have seen of this type - and of great rarity. Note how well centred the two opposed crescent moons are, how clutter-free the rest of the obverse is, how smooth its rose-gold surfaces are. Note that this delightful horse is fully displayed in all its iron age glory, from its big-eyed head to its hairy tail. Note how richly ornamented the reverse is, especially the unusually wavy branch. Note too the thin circular border enclosing the horse - when did you last see an Addedomaros stater using this device? Finally, note how well the king's name is shown on this very special specimen. Chris Rudd March list.                        8.1.07
