Coin of the week

This lovely Verica Vine Leaf gold stater has a neat round flan of rose gold and a full inscription. King Cunobelinus proudly promoted an ear of wheat on his gold staters, associated with CAMV. Not to be outdone by his rival north of the Thames, King Verica boldly featured a vine leaf on some of his gold staters, associated with the first part of his own name. It is thought that this vine leaf referred to Verica’s importation of fine Italian wine in particular and his close friendship with Rome and Roman customs in general. The engraving of this stater is definitely Roman in style. Ex John Haritou collection and before that a well known Australian collection. Chris Rudd March catalogue.                                                                               8.3.10
