As you can see from this
exceptionally sharp gold quarter
stater, Eppillus asserts that he
was a son of Commios. After the
death of Commios he seems to
have taken control of some
Atrebatic territory and then,
after he was dislodged by his
brother Tincomarus, moved into
Kent where he struck this
extremely rare quarter stater.
We call it 'Eppillus Margate'
after the specimen in the
collection of Sir John Evans
(now in the British Museum)
which was found near Margate,
Kent, over a century and a half
ago. Only six others are
recorded and this is the first
example we've had. Chris Rudd May list.
