These days a lot of attention is
being paid to Ancient British
gold staters and rightly so
because they are remarkably rare
and fantastically fascinating
ancient coins. A lot of money is
currently being paid for them
too and rightly so because there
aren't enough top grade examples
around to satisfy the demand and
because, despite their premium
prices, they are still
undervalued when compared with
Greek and Roman gold coins of
comparable scarcity and
interest. However, it is worth
noting that some opportunities
are being missed with Ancient
British silver coins which have
been somewhat overlooked by
collectors in the past couple of
years. For example, there are
three important silver coins in
our July list which are
currently great value for money:
a Chichester Boar at £350, a
Sudbury Snakeheads at £375 and a
Tasciovanos Griffin at £375. In
years to come we suspect that a
number of collectors will regret
not having snapped up these
extremely rare silver coins
while they were still
affordable.
